As part of our ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of working animals, our team recently conducted a community donkey clinic in Mpingu Lilongwe. This activity was successful with generous support from our partner organization the Animal Aid Abroad. The visit came at a crucial time, as the farming season draws near and many donkeys are being used to plough fields and transport materials in preparation for planting.
During our outreach, we observed that many donkeys were suffering from severe back wounds and other signs of distress. These injuries were largely the result of harsh handling, overworking, and the use of improper carts. In some cases, poor communication between owners and their animals had led to unnecessary beating and mistreatment.
Throughout the day, our dedicated team treated all donkeys that were brought to the clinic, providing pain relief, wound cleaning, and medical care. Just as importantly, we spent time engaging donkey owners in open conversations about animal welfare, compassion, and effective communication. Many owners expressed gratitude for the knowledge shared, showing eagerness to learn better ways to care for their animals.
Looking ahead, our next visit will focus on practical training of donkey owners in donkey management in relation to farming activities. We plan to demonstrate proper hitching techniques and the use of appropriate harnesses, which are essential for preventing injuries and improving the efficiency of farm work.
