Strengthening community health through vaccinations

Canine rabies vaccinations remain one of the most effective measures for protecting both animal and human health.  In Africa, rabies still poses a serious public health risk. Limited vaccination coverage and low public awareness contribute to many unreported cases, which in turn lead to human deaths. To address this, the LSPCA continuously vaccinates dogs in hard-to-reach residential areas across Lilongwe Urban.

We were greatly encouraged by the strong turnout at our recent vaccination hotspots in Areas 23, 25, 49, Chinsapo, and M’gona. Dog owners came forward in numbers, and our officers worked diligently to ensure every dog received proper care and protection throughout the exercise.

The response from communities reflects a growing awareness of preventive animal healthcare and responsible ownership. It also reinforces how much public participation matters in advancing rabies prevention. When dogs are vaccinated, the risk of transmission drops significantly, protecting both animals and people.

Vaccination is not only a veterinary intervention. It is a shared responsibility that contributes to safer households and healthier communities. We extend our sincere appreciation to our partner and sponsor, WTG-Germany (Welttierschutzgesellschaft e.V.), for their continued support in strengthening animal health initiatives and bringing essential veterinary services to communities that need them most.
